Let me start this review by saying that no matter if you play jazz, funk, blues, pop, rock, har rock or any type of metal - this amp can do it and it does it well! It may take some tweaking but eventually you will find a tone that suits your needs. It's also great that you can play it at low volumes without the sound getting fizzy or dull. It feels like a much more expensive amp than it is and the quality is amazing. Not like many other products being assembled in Asia.

The only 2 things i don't like about this amp is it's speaker and the amount of gain you get from turning the "Gain" knob. The speaker in my Blackstar is a "Celestion Rocket 50", which surprised me because I read multiple places that it's a "Celestion Seventy-eighty" that comes included. The Rocket 50 sounds allright though it isn't as tight as I would like it to be.

The gain knob is a bit misleading. Anything above 5 is too much imo. You have to turn it real careful if you want a crunchy sound and when I play blues the gain knob is at 1.

But all in all this amp is the best amp at its price. Beats Marshall, Orange, Fender - you name it.

Bought this for my son for Xmas and he loves it. The sound quality and build quality are both fantastic. I bought this because the Blackstar amps all seem to get great reviews and I can see why....its a top amp.

I wanted to get him an amp that he could use both as a practice amp at home and also for small gigs that he has started to do at school and other small local venues. I went for the HT20 because it has a bit more headroom in the clean channel than the HT5 but is also small and portable enough to take to events in the boot of my car. Its quite a heavy amp, but manageable.

    Overall, a great purchase.

Best purchase I've made in a long time. The clean channel is so crisp and clear and when pushed breaks up very nicely for the overdrive sound. The drive channel works how it's suppose to, but I haven't used it much because the music I play, but it doesn't bring down the amp in any way. Rock guitarists will love it. The isf nob is one of the most incredible attributes to the amp, I love being able to go from a really bright tone to a nice warm tone with such ease.

When really driven the tubes sound amazing, highly recommended.

Before the HT20 I had a Vox Valvetronix and was never happy with any of the distortion models. I tried to bypass the awful distortion with a Zoom G9 multi fx but, if anything, that sounded even more synthetic

The Blackstar has a nice buttery overdrive sound of its own with really silly amounts of gain on tap, but I am astounded by how good the Zoom amp models sound through it, that piece of kit has really come to life now.

I can't really tell you how this unit compares to other valve amps because its the first one I've had, but I did a fair bit of looking around and there isnt much else (if anything) in this price range with 2 channels and an effects loop.

Finally, I would just like to mention the volume levels because I guess some of you will be torn between the 5w and 20w models like I was. I'm finding the 20w one is fine for practicing in the evenings at home with the master and channel volumes set real low. You really couldn't crank it at home though, it would damage your hearing.

Its overkill for a practice amp but I think its great ;-)
