The Ashdown AAR1V 100w Acoustic Guitar Amp

As well as making some fine bass guitar amplification, Ashdown are also pretty well known for their acoustic amps. The Ashdown AAR1V Radiator 1 combo is an extremely portable, 100w acoustic guitar combo with built in digital reverb and an XLR mic input. The Radiator 1 even has a balanced direct output for recording or output to a PA.

Here's what Ashdown say about the Acoustic Radiator 1 with Reverb

For the acoustic musician on the move, the Ashdown Acoustic Radiator 1 combines a 100 Watt bridged power section, a fully-featured preamplifier and an 8", dual tweeter array driver in a compact, portable and beautifully designed cabinet. There are 2 channels with facilities including a switchable input for active and piezo pick-ups with a phase switch for the elimination of standing wave feedback, an XLR mic input with switchable phantom power, bass and treble controls with a shape switch providing instant access to an optimum acoustic guitar Eq setting, a switchable notch filter with a variable frequency control to tune out feedback, and an all-new digital reverb. Rear panel facilities include a balanced XLR DI output for recording use, or for connection to a PA system, an FX loop and a line / link output.

I was looking for a small, portable but powerful 2 channel acoustic amp to take a guitar and a mic input for small pub gigs. The fact that this had a DI out and on-board reverb was a bonus. I got it a great price but would not have paid the full RRP for it. The sound quality is superb, very pure and clear. The reverb is great and really adds a nice level (adjustable) of warmth to the sound. I had used the 50w Marshall and was not that impressed - in my view, the Ashdown is a class apart and in a different league. The only minor gripe I would have is that it does not seem like a true 100w to me - it is not deafeningly loud when cranked and needs to be turned up high to get a good powerful sound off it - no problem as there is no distortion at all, even when set to max. This is where the DI out is a real winner as, if you find yourself needing more volume, you would probably already be in a venue with a PA system so just connect it up and use it as an on-stage monitor instead. Very pleased with my purchase but I also got a small folding luggage cart for carrying it round as it does get very heavy after a while. Very robust, well made and even looks nice too - very retro! All in all a great choice for the required application, high quality sound / tone and very pleased - just dont't expect face-melting levels of volume!

Brilliant little amp that does what it says on the tin. Useful two channels that allows for guitar and vocals and with a suprising amount of volume from such a little box. A bit heavy for its size though, but it is a solid and robust unit. A 5 star amp and very good value.

A very powerful, small heavy amp. The Ashdown gives a very clear sound, with plenty of adjustment available and two inputs that can both be used at the same time. I bought 2 of these for small gigs for me and the wife to replace our much larger P.A. system and they certainly will do for any room up to the size of a school hall.

Having the controls on the front is a bit difficult if the amps on the floor, but if you have them on a table or stand it is not a problem. It would be good if the knobs were marked a little better so you could see how far around you had turned them, as all there is is a slight notch stamped into the metal knob then painted over. I expect a felt pen will sort that out though. These are only small niggles really, as they are the best I've used in 38 years of playing. Did I mention they were heavy?

Who could resist the offer of such a quality piece of kit at such an attractive price? Not me anyway and if you add in Andertons's sterling on-line service, it's a total no brainer.

As a semi-pro the AAR1V was just what I needed for small gigs, handling the vocal and acoustic guitar parts with my Fender Mustang II holding down the Tele Twang. The clarity and sensitivity of this amp has to be heard to be believed, with a subtle range of effects available from the well laid out knobs and buttons. And in a solidly built case. What more could a guy ask for?

Like a previous reviewer I di't think I would get such a decent acoustic amp for this sort of money, but I'm well pleased, a nice powerful little combo, It's a pleasure to have a decent monitored sound from the Acoustic while singing over it. Good stuff!

Vintage looks, amazing tone, dual channels so can act as a mini pa which is perfect for the singer songwriter. And at a 100 watts, this little looking amp, packs a hugh punch. The only thing that is high level is the price.

Top quality acoustic amp at an amazing price.

I had assumed acoustic amps this good were outside my budget and had previously just used PA to amplify acoustic guitar or banjo.

This amp is very portable, takes two instrument inputs with separate levels and it can take a vocal mic input. If you use the 3 pin XLR mic input you can effectively use the amp as a minj PA system, amplifying two instruments and a vocal. Alternatively use the amp as your stage monitor and use the DI output to a PA system.

The sound quality is rich but uncoloured, so instruments still sound acoustic and vocals are warm and clear. On board reverb is good too.
