Ashdown MAG 300H Bass Head (EVO II)

Ashdown is one of the worlds biggest names in bass amplification. They have a huge list of famous users (U2, System of a Down, Radio Head, Jamiroquai - the list goes on & on!), and whats even better is that Ashdown is a British company. The Ashdown Mag 300H head is a semi pro bass head that's ideal for the player who's regularly playing small pubs & clubs. The head will deliver 307 watts into a 4 ohm load (2 separate 8 ohm speaker cabs will give you a 4 ohm load). The pre amp controls are also probably better than you'd expect on an amp of this money. The sub harmonic switch is also a very popular feature on the Ashdown Mag Series amps. The switch kicks in a sub octave effect (it duplicates the bass signal but an octave below the actual signal) that really fattens up the sound. The Mag series cabinets are ideal to go with this head - choose a 2x10 plus a 1x15 for the ideal mid sized portable set up, or maybe a single 4x10 cab for a more funky sound. As with all the Mag series products, the price is outstanding for an amp with these features.

Here's what Ashdown say about the MAG 300H Bass Head

Designed for the busy semi-pro player who doesn't require all the sophisticated tone shaping and connectivity of the ABM range, the MAG range nonetheless delivers classic Ashdown tone all the way.

The MAG 300H head features a potent new fan-cooled 307 watts RMS power section. Rotary bass, middle and treble controls are supplemented by smaller rotary controls providing 15dB of cut and boost at 220Hz and 1.6kHz, providing a comprehensive 5 band EQ section. Additionally, front panel push switches for Bright and Deep settings provide instant access to attacking and warm, rounded sounds respectively and, on the subject of low-end response, the trademark Ashdown sub-harmonic generator is ready and able to deliver truck loads of earth moving tone if called upon. Inputs are provided for active and passive instruments and the front panel also features an effects send and return, a tuner/line output and a balanced DI output for direct connection to a mixing console.

I had the Mag 300 115 combo and 2x10 extension cab for a while, and there was just something not quite right. I exchanged the combo (thanks Andertons!) for this head and an Ashdown 1x15 compact cab, and together with the 2x10 compact cab I already had, this stack is brilliant. A nice deep, bass sound that can be tuned to perfection using the simple controls on the head, and a decent sized stack that sounds (and looks) awesome, yet stands around 5 feet high in total. It doesn't take much tweaking to get a good, loud boom that can be heard over the loudest of guitar amps, an thanks to its size, is easy to transport even if your car is full of cabs!

Over all I love this amp, I have had Laney heads and cabs, a Line 6 combo, and some other bizarrely named thing that was my first amp, and the Ashdown kicks them all into a bucket! and I would recommend this over the Mag combo simply because the larger cab can make all the difference sound wise, while not taking up much space (if you get the compact ones).

Definitely recommend this head, and getting it from Andertons, this shop rocks, the staff are friendly and helpful, and they have so much stuff!

Good communication, received a phone call letting me know there was a small mark on the underside in case (being ex-display) I wasn't happy. Made no odds to me, although it would have been nice to have been offered a few quid off as it wasn't boxed and came without manual or registration paperwork either, but it was very well packaged, and I was given a link via email to track it's delivery progress. I'm very happy to say it worked superbly straight away and I have to say it is an awesome amp. The sound of my Yamaha RBX375 and LTD ESP B-55 is faithfully reproduced with amazing clarity and depth. Such a versatile control panel with switchable on/off EQ, bass boost and treble boost, and a beautiful compressor. Unbelievable piece of kit for such a small outlay. Well done Andertons and well done Ashdown !

I bought the Ashdown on reputation alone. I have since recorded with it. I haven't finished fiddling with the tone setup, but the Subharmonic feature adds a depth that is crushing. I recorded a simple demo track, using just drums, guitar, and bass. The Ashdown performed really well adding a truly thudding resonance. Once I had finished messing about with a rough mix, I could see why Ashdown features on the stages of stadiums. You don't have to get the best, like the ABM series, the MAG series is just as good at making you feel like you are on stage at Wembley, even if that's the name of the pub!
